In my therapy practice background, I have been honored to work with some wonderful first responders and have had training specific to the needs of first responders in general. Specifically I am certified in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), which is a therapy approach proven by much research to help one’s own brain process through traumatic material or adverse life events.
The actual reprocessing phase (the toughest part) does not involve much talking, and so much can be resolved without the therapist actually knowing too many specifics about what is coming up for a client. In part, this can be what makes EMDR attractive to many first responders. It also works efficiently, especially when there isn’t a complex history in one’s childhood, or previous life experiences.
This will be discussed as part of the initial screening to see if it is appropriate for you.
We know that taking the first step towards therapy can be hard. That's why Jean offers a free phone consultation to help you determine if this practice is the right fit for you. If any of this information speaks to you, please reach out.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE!
EMDR helps a person get relief in a way that other, traditional talk therapies don’t. Many first responders have shared the overall thought, “Why should I talk about this when it will always be there…talking won’t make it go away… it already happened…what’s the point?” It is absolutely TRUE that EMDR won’t change the past and what happened. It CAN, however, change how one feels about themselves or others in relation to the past event and CAN help a person get LASTING relief from troubling thoughts, intrusive images, nightmares, powerful and confusing emotions, beliefs that are so connected to a particularly bad experience. It does NOT strip away adaptive coping skills that are absolutely necessary to continue this difficult work as a first responder.
EMDR is a therapy approach that is excellent at helping prevent problems / issues from “stacking up” over time by clearing out more difficult, job-related experiences in an efficient and timely manner. Utilizing EMDR can help prevent all types of first responders from taking home the stress collected from a particularly challenging event or series of events. It can help prevent additional problems from developing as secondary to a particular stressful event or lots of events over time that stay stuck if not dealt with.
We all do the best we know how to cope with the day to day stressors. Coping with daily stress is something first responders excel at—using humor, camaraderie, and resilience to reset and face each new day. However, extreme events, high stress, vicarious trauma, and other intense experiences can overwhelm even the strongest individuals. When these events aren't processed, they can get "stuck" in the nervous system, leading to sleep problems, PTSD symptoms, hypervigilance when it isn’t needed, startle reflex, reduced tolerance of loud people or places, marital / familial issues, anger, irritability, depression, anxiety, substance / alcohol abuse or other addictions, and numbing or withdrawing from the GOOD things in life. These issues affect not just the person but their loved ones as well. EMDR can help clear these effects, preventing them from compounding and impacting your well-being.
On rare occasions, there will be a health insurance plan that does not include coverage for mental health benefits, that does not include coverage for certain diagnoses, or that uses a different insurance company for behavioral/mental health than your medical coverage. It is important for you to contact your specific insurance plan to understand your unique benefits, such as if you have a deductible to meet, if you need a prior approval or a referral, if I am in-network with your plan, what your co-pay costs are per session, etc. I will also try to assist you in determining what insurance coverage you have.
